I am a competitive athlete and board certified Doctor of Physical Therapy who has been practicing in the New York area for over ten years. You might have scene me around in the gyms blending in!
As an athlete, I know what it’s like to have something taken away from you because your body let you down. Over 15 years ago, following a knee injury, I was diagnosed with irreversible infrapatellar fat pad impingement syndrome. I was told to give up running and try biking or swimming. As for surgery? It was out of the question. As a competitive Division One track and field athlete, this meant no more pole vaults, hurdles, jumping, runs on the beach, long hikes, jogs with my dog…nothing. As you can imagine, this prognosis was devastating.
Sports physical therapy allowed me to rehabilitate my knee enough to compete and train again. I could squat 255 pounds, leap 18 feet and spring over 12 feet in the air using a pole. I won the Northeast Conference Champion in the pole vault in 2010 and came runner up twice more.
Although I had performance successes, my overall fitness was still compromised. I could not jog for more than 5-10 minutes without debilitating pain. The consequence of pushing my limits was not being able to walk the next day. Physical therapy and cortisone shots didn’t help, and so I quit trying to run for about 5 years.
I can still remember this painful moment.
